Pharrell Williams’ HAPPY Up for Grammy; But Streaming Royalties~Make You Cry

“Happy” by Pharrel Williams. It has all of the elements of a perfect pop song: infectious musical hook, mantra-like lyrics that resonate, and rhythm and tempo that takes you OVER- no matter WHAT you are doing, or WHERE you are… But here is a blue note about it all.

Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth

As with so many millions of other listeners- I can’t get enough of this song!- “Happy” by Pharrel Williams. It has all of the elements of a perfect pop song: infectious musical hook, mantra-like lyrics that resonate, and rhythm and tempo that takes you OVER- no matter WHAT you are doing, or WHERE you are HA!

Sir Pharrell Williams is up for several Grammy categories, including best video- and I do hope that he bags it righteous clean.

But here is a blue note about it all: As the world moves more and more into streaming, we musicians and songwriters make less and less every year for our song and lyric writing, recording, and distributing. My music yields just a %of pennies each play. But it must be better for a hot musician like Pharrell, yes? Here is what it looks like for a musician who has ‘made it’:

Through the first three months of 2014, “Happy” was streamed 43 million times on Pandora, while “All Of Me” was played 55 million times on the service.
“Happy” brought in just $2,700 in publisher and songwriter royalties in the first quarter of this year, while “All Of Me” yielded just $3,400.

At current rates, Bandier said, one million plays of a song on Pandora typically translates to only approximately $60 in royalties, which then gets shared between the songwriters and publishers.

So, Spotify should, and Pandora will~ “revisit” royalty rates next year. Uh, Yah, you all do that. Meanwhile, some bigtime artists are removing their music from streamlining services. This is just one more reason to make music for ourselves and fans, and distance ourselves farther from the powers that be in the music industry.  Sing your Bliss as one friend says, and “don’t hold back.”

Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, give me all you got, don’t hold back
Yeah, well I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine
Yeah, no offense to you don’t waste your time
Here’s why
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy

Music: Pharrell Williams
Here is his 24-hr video for HAPPY. Skip around, it’s fun to see so much much bliss on the streets. 😉

Divas in the House! Women of Soul~ White House Concert-PBS

Did you see it? I missed Monday’s show this week, but you can see it was most definitely a night to remember; Legends who defined the genre, crazy-great energy onstage, and mad love in the room….Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae, Melissa Ethridge, Ariana Grande.

Did you see it? I missed Monday’s show this week, but you can see it was mos def a night to remember; Legends who defined the genre, bringing their crazy-great energy onstage; so much love in the house. Didn’t realize this series has been going on for decades. But this concert, I’m sure, must take the cake; Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae, Melissa Ethridge, Tessanne Chin, Ariana Grande.  I just love seeing Janelle Monae and all the risk she takes; she does that old-skool-meets-new with so much flair and confidence; always leaves me wanting more. But then, Divas do that- don’t they!!!!! 😉 ahahaha!

In the Studio: Music and Movie Dubs

I’m back in the studio now, writing new music- for others, and dubbing voices for my first Indian film- Kiss!

I’m back to writing and recording in the studio now- for others. The current project has me writing songs entirely out of character, which is kind of fun. I’m writing the songs in a different genre as well; alt-country. So it feels a bit like acting, each song is a small play with its own storyline and characters. Tribute songs- very human. To sum up a life, a legend in one song. Can’t say more now, but I’ll be in this mindset of other people’s live for a while, until it’s all finished, sometime in October.

Speaking of acting, er movies, I got my very first voice dubbing opportunity this summer for an Indian film and it’s just out! Wheeee!  It’s a hip little number, a romantic comedy called Kiss, with actors Adivi Sesh and Priya Banerjee.  It just hit the theaters here in SF area, though I think it was released in India in July.  Sesh, also the director, filmed parts of it here in San Francisco. It opened this week in San Jose. Check it out!

Fresh Alchemy- Why Each Show is Different

…This is the scary cool fun of it all. There really is that slow motion point in the very beginning of a show, that terrifying second when you walk out, look out at an audience, and know that you have absolutely no control over the next 90 minutes. Despite all the prep work or a full house. HA!

We just had our biggest show of the year, (so far ;)), last week at world premier Yoshi’s jazz club.  And a great turn out (Thank you friends for celebrating Spring with us. And dancing…!!).

I always welcome a mental break after these; all the extra energy leading up; getting music ready, planning a live act, promoting, stressing (what if no one shows?!)- and then, going with whatever happens on stage that day.

This is what makes each show so different from the last.  We feel it as both as musicians and performers. Last week’s show felt more raw, and all the more special for it. We tried new things. And though we may attempt to prepare for everything, the uncertainty plus the freshness of each second = spontaneity. Thankfully, I haven’t had to sing my songs 1000’s of times. Yet 😉  But even if they weren’t fresh, I think I would have to make up new words each show. Or change up the rhythms, something! I couldn’t go through motions, not with something I love so much.

Next up: writing/recording new music for clients. Mentally, even that wants a break. Must fight the inertia…studio calls!  Poetry and Music Muses…hover closer…!

This is actually a cool ad: how we never see ourselves as others see us.  Just Beautiful.

Day 8: Siren, Come Close

Siren. You who inspired “Swimming”
melody of that certain dive down a sunny
sea, true aquamarine that dissolves the self
aquatic bliss… come close
your song is requested
for a funeral.

I’ve been asked to play my music for funerals and memorial gatherings lately. Too many, and one more this weekend. (In one case a friend asked me because she said my songs were the last ones her mom listened to…)  It’s of course an amazing honor to be asked, particularly by friends, but it’s all got me thinking (obsessing) about my lyrics, and what exactly is appropriate.

Normally I sing for celebration; my songs are generally soothing, and about being in the moment. I suppose this is why I am invited to sing/play in the first place.  And while I know to obviously leave off all spirited songs, what of the rest?  Where hearts and minds are raw, and all is amplified, there shouldn’t be too much…senseless beauty. But how much is too much…?  I do want to soothe hearts, however I can.

So I decided to ask the Muses who brought me the original songs and  lyrics, for help.

Siren. You who inspired “Swimming”
melody of that certain dive down a sunny
sea, true aquamarine that dissolves the self
aquatic bliss… come close
your song is requested
for a funeral.

Here, behind the veil and before the hearse,
with erasure ready, I await… show me
the parts to change, hide subdue, so no offense to life
no shock to stone.

Surely the endless blue, aqua holding you can be
kept, that comfort sea of light to both sides.
But too much time in forever when the tower
hides spring on this hill, in this field, with its view
to a bridge.

And too much beauty in the dappled dream
when even the faces of angels are solid and all the
tears around us paint a monochrome blue.

Siren, you come with images… humanity, some connection
humming verses I’ve never heard… Siren, keep singing…

Post Script:  4/10

Last night, I met and played with some other amazing musicians who will be playing music for our friend’s memorial this Sat. The host was there; I asked him what he wanted us to play, and if we should change in any way, our sound for the day.  He said, “This is a celebration of life. I want the music to be as happy and beautiful as it usually is. That is how my wife would want it to be.”  Of course.  This will be my thought the whole time. I’m thrilled to collaborate with other musicians she loved.

AccordionBabes Collage

We had our first sold out “Accordion Babes Pin-up Show” last weekend (yes!), at the Rhythmix Theater on a very rainy night. Thank you friends for coming out ;-).

JTs- Live at Rhythmix 12-12

I book this night as a cabaret every year to feature multiple accordion players, all women- who front a plethora of bands around the Bay, and Paris too ;), and/or who are in this accordion calendar.  With the revival of roots music and our continued global cross-pollination, we too are enjoying the comeback of those historically maligned instruments: the banjo, theremin, saw, ukulele, and accordion. Interesting, eh?  And we’re writing lots of new music with them, in new ways, across more genres.  Personally, I want the world to see beyond the cabaret kitsch (will that ever go away?!), and show that the accordion can be downright cool, even sexy at times: it can have you dancing (Zydeco & Celtic stomps), make you swoon (tangos & boleros), make you cry (think The God Father score), or transport you across borders (rancheras & Norteño, Baltic & French rock).  That’s what these shows are all about: to show the world what’s new with accordion, and to help us celebrate the next big one…  The 2013 Accordion Babes Pin up Calendar and companion CD! Can’t believe this is our 5th year. Renee de la Prade is the mastermind, producer, editor of the babes calendar every year.  A group of us help her out with sponsorship, fundraising, and such.
