Day 13 Poem~ Flux & Flow

30 poems in 30 days

Today my poem is for a song- actually the lyrics to a song, the last one I have left to work on before leaving town tomorrow to record in Texas.   And now I’m done! 12 songs.

Usually my lyrics start as poems, but not this one.  The music, a bossa nova, was a collaboration with another songwriter, and the sweet energy of the music led to the lyrics.  The melody hook in the chorus felt like irony; so that is where this one went.

The song is extremely light & happy- like bossas are but the theme is a bit heavy- the constant change all around us & how hard that can be to roll with sometimes.  The fact that no matter how great something is- it never stays the same, and likewise, no matter how awful something is, it too changes to something else. On the one hand this can seem forever unsettling.  But I like that theme of finding that place in the center of the chaos or flow.  Like the little boulder in the center of the river.  Also, I think that if rocks shift and tremble, as they so often do here on the Pacific plates, then change is a natural teacher to keep your sea legs on & be ready for anything. 😉  At least that’s my lesson now.

Since my song lyrics are less abstract than my poems, and rhyme in places, I submit this as lyric poetry.

So much is changing every day.
Yet beauty inspires us all the same.

If I could catch it now, hold this precious space
bottle up- all this grace.

Just when I thought I’d seen everything, you surprise me
Keep me on my toes, to see where it goes.
Just when I think I’ve figured it out- It alludes me
Shifting sands beneath us all, flux & flow.

A whirling center’s where I’d like to be.

Someplace to catch my breath and anchor where it lands.
But a river runs thru these hands.

Just when I think I’ve figured it out- it alludes me
Just a whirl of Constant change, Flux & flow. Flux & flow
Just when I thought the earth stood firm, it goes trembling,
Sway and shake, stay awake.  Flux & flow.

Just when I thought I’d seen everything, you surprise me.
Keep me on my toes, to see where it goes.
Just when I think I’ve figured it out- it alludes me
shifting sands, undertow, Flux & flow.

What did I know- the river’s moving- flux & flow.
What did I know- constantly changing- flux & flow.
What did I know- the sands are shifting- flux & flow….
